Billy Bush is candidly sharing his reflections on the personal challenges he faced after his dismissal from the Today show, a consequence of the leaked 2005 conversation with Donald Trump that revealed his misogynistic views. In a recent episode of Literally! With Rob Lowe, Bush recounts the emotional turmoil he experienced during this period in 2016. Confessing that he contemplated drastic measures, he remarked, “I did everything I could think of to keep myself from jumping off the building, ’cause I’m like — Rob, I was about to get a huge paycheck, my first really big paycheck.”
Bush credits his brother, tech entrepreneur Jonathan Bush, as his primary source of support amid the fallout. “My brother is my best friend… And in this case, he was there for me. And I would never have survived without him,” Billy shared. His brother’s support was instrumental in helping him navigate this troubling time. Furthermore, he acknowledged receiving encouragement from his pastor and mentioned seeking positivity by participating in motivational activities, including “walking on rocks with Tony Robbins.”
He also expressed gratitude for the backing he received from friends and colleagues, including actors Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet, and Steve Levitan from Modern Family. Additionally, he received heartfelt letters from celebrities like Michael Strahan and Cindy Crawford. The most overwhelming support came from actor Dennis Quaid, who wrote an impassioned letter expressing his outrage toward the situation, which Bush found both reassuring and uplifting.
Throughout his experience, Bush learned to forgive those who did not reach out during his time of distress, recognizing that some may not have known how to offer support in sensitive situations. Importantly, he reflected on how silence can be challenging, but understanding others’ perspectives helps him heal.
Bush faced a turbulent journey after losing his significant role but has since resumed his career, accepting a hosting position at Extra in 2019, where he remained until his departure from the show last May. His reflections are not only introspective but serve as an inspirational reminder of resilience in facing public and personal challenges. This resilience embodies the hopeful message that support systems and time can lead to recovery and new beginnings in one’s personal and professional life.
