The year 2025 is set to be a landmark year for women’s cricket in Fiji. The national women’s team will not only take part in the inaugural Four Nations tournament in New Caledonia, but they will also have the honor of hosting the ICC T20 East Asia Pacific qualifier for the first time.
Sitiveni Rokoro, the chief executive officer of Cricket Fiji, announced that seven teams will compete at the qualifier in Fiji. These teams include Japan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Samoa, Cook Islands, and Fiji. The victorious team at this qualifier will earn a coveted spot in the women’s World Cup scheduled for 2026.
Rokoro indicated that following the conclusion of the Suva T20 League, a national squad will be picked for the Four Nations tournament, which is organized by Cricket France and is set to take place in March.
In addition to this significant event, Fiji will also host a secondary school under-19 tournament in January and has already assembled a training squad for the U19 boys, who are set to participate in the division U19 World Cup qualifiers in Japan in April. There has been a strong interest from various cricket associations for the annual Easter senior men’s tournament, with each association eager to send two teams. The best eight teams from the Easter tournament will advance to a super eight tournament later in the year, although the dates for this event have yet to be finalized.
Moreover, the Fiji Secondary Schools U19 girls and boys tournament will be held following its successful revival this year, highlighting the growing interest and participation in cricket among youth in Fiji.
This proactive approach to restructuring and promoting cricket at various levels in Fiji indicates a bright future for the sport in the region, particularly for women’s cricket, which is gaining momentum and recognition. With increased participation and support, the importance of international exposure and competitive play is being emphasized, paving the way for greater achievements on the global stage.
