Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden convened in Lima, Peru, during the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. Their discussions centered on strategies to stabilize bilateral relations and collaboratively manage global challenges. Both leaders recognized advancements in key areas, including climate change, trade, and cultural exchanges, while also committing to maintain open lines of communication.

President Xi noted the stability that has characterized China-U.S. relations over the past four years, despite various obstacles. He emphasized fundamental principles such as respect for sovereignty and opposition to “Taiwan independence.” Xi stressed that mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation are vital for a lasting partnership. He shared seven guiding principles that should govern China-U.S. relations, highlighting the significance of strategic understanding, credibility, equality, and the need to avoid conflicts while expanding cooperation.

Conversely, President Biden reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to the one-China policy and expressed opposition to Taiwanese independence as well. He pointed out that while competition is a natural aspect of the relationship, it should not spiral into conflict. Areas of collaboration, particularly in artificial intelligence and counternarcotics, were underscored as essential. The leaders acknowledged the necessity of international stability and committed to collaboratively managing their differences.

Topics such as cybersecurity, the South China Sea, and the ongoing Ukraine crisis were also part of the dialogue. They explored strategies aimed at promoting peace and preventing the decoupling of supply chains between their nations.

Both leaders agreed on the importance of maintaining human control over nuclear weaponry and enhancing international cooperation concerning AI. They called attention to the fact that competition among major powers should not dictate global relations, advocating instead for unity and mutual benefit.

The meeting exhibited a shared willingness to enhance relations moving forward. Xi concluded by reiterating China’s dedication to nurturing a stable and constructive partnership with the U.S., emphasizing that dialogue and cooperation are the keys to a prosperous future.

In a world increasingly defined by geopolitical tensions, the collaborative spirit demonstrated between Xi and Biden offers a hopeful outlook, suggesting that despite differences, there is a mutual interest in fostering peace and stability on both sides.
