Dinesh Vijan, well-regarded for his successful films such as Stree 2 and Munjya, recently made a controversial decision that has left cinema exhibitors disheartened. On May 8, the announcement was made that his upcoming film, Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, would not premiere in theaters as planned on May 9. Instead, it will be released directly on Amazon Prime Video a week later on May 16. The producers cited “recent events and heightened security drills across the nation” as the rationale for this shift, prioritizing the safety of audiences.

This decision has not been well-received by multiplex owners, many of whom were caught off guard. An anonymous multiplex official expressed skepticism, stating they only learned of the film’s cancellation through social media and received official notice only an hour and a half later, leaving little time to adjust their schedules and refund ticket sales. Concerns have been raised about the potential financial repercussions as Bhool Chuk Maaf was poised to gross approximately Rs. 15 crores over its opening weekend, fueled by advance ticket sales.

Some exhibitors linked the film’s move to the digital realm to lack of audience interest. For instance, Vishek Chauhan of Roopbani Cinema noted minimal advance ticket sales in various locations, questioning the necessity of canceling a theatrical release when there wasn’t apparent competition from other Hindi films.

Producers seem to have opted for an OTT release amid concerns about audience turnout, especially following the recent decrease in ticket sales in certain regions. There is a fear among exhibitors that this trend may influence other producers to favor immediate OTT releases, echoing a pattern witnessed during the pandemic when several films bypassed cinema altogether.

Despite this setback, some industry voices are hopeful. Akshaye Rathi, an exhibitor, acknowledged the unique pressures facing filmmakers and expressed optimism that future projects will still find their way to theaters. He emphasized the importance of cinema in revitalizing community engagement and providing entertainment.

In light of these developments, all eyes remain on Bhool Chuk Maaf’s subsequent release on Amazon Prime Video. The situation illustrates the delicate balance filmmakers must maintain between maximizing viewership and supporting the traditional cinema experience. As the film industry continues to adapt, there is hope for a resurgence in theater attendance as audiences increasingly seek shared entertainment experiences.
