Motorists in Fiji have been warned against forming Viber groups intended to share the locations of police traffic checkpoints and speed radar systems, a practice designed to evade law enforcement aimed at maintaining road safety. Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, the Acting Divisional Police Commander of Northern, emphasized that this behavior not only undermines police efforts but also significantly increases risks on the roads.

According to SP Soqosoqo, drivers who depend on these alerts tend to decelerate as they approach checkpoints but then accelerate afterwards, which can lead to accidents. He made it clear that such actions disrupt police operations and warned that those participating in these groups will be held accountable.

In his message, the Superintendent stressed the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to enhance road safety and eliminate reckless driving. As the New Year approaches, police in the Northern Division are on high alert, conducting foot patrols and various road operations to ensure the safety of the public.

The LTA has also pointed out that driver fatigue is a significant contributor to road accidents in the country. They advise drivers to take necessary breaks during long trips to mitigate the risk of accidents caused by tiredness. Passengers are encouraged to voice concerns if they observe signs of fatigue or erratic driving from their drivers. The LTA promotes a “Stop, Revive, and Survive” approach for safer road practices.

Ultimately, the authorities are urging an end to the interference with police operations through the creation of platforms that alert drivers about checkpoints and speed cameras, as these activities threaten communal efforts to improve road safety for everyone.

As we head into the festive season, it’s crucial for all road users to stay alert and responsible, ensuring that both drivers and passengers prioritize safety for a more secure driving environment for all.
