The Consumer Council of Fiji is issuing a strong warning to shoppers to be cautious while making online purchases as reports of fraud rise sharply in the lead-up to Eid. With the festive season approaching, many consumers are shifting to online platforms to buy traditional clothing and accessories. However, CEO Seema Shandil notes that this increased demand has led to a surge in fraudulent sellers operating primarily through social media channels.

Shandil highlights a common scam where sellers ask for partial or full upfront deposits but often fail to deliver merchandise or provide updates on orders. Some consumers have reported only receiving partial refunds after threatening legal action against these sellers. Since January of last year, there have been 44 complaints lodged against an online trader based in Lautoka, with customers indicating they paid for items that were never received.

Despite the Consumer Council’s consistent warnings and referrals to the Police, these fraudulent practices persist, taking advantage of consumers during a time of excitement and celebration. The Council is committed to working closely with law enforcement to investigate and address these issues and is monitoring online marketplaces to take necessary actions against deceitful operators.

Adding context, past festive seasons such as Diwali have similarly seen a rise in complaints about fraud and misinformation. Last year, the Council recorded 163 complaints amounting to over $15,000 during Diwali, indicating the ongoing challenge of protecting consumers during peak shopping periods. Issues included price gouging and misleading advertisements, especially related to high-demand items like food and decorations.

Consumers are urged to remain vigilant during this festive season. Shandil emphasizes the importance of verifying the credibility of online sellers, avoiding hasty purchases, and keeping receipts to aid in resolving any disputes. The proactive measures by the Consumer Council highlight the need for consumer awareness, reinforcing that while the holiday season should be joyous, caution is essential for ensuring a safe and fulfilling shopping experience.
