Beware: Fiji’s Scams Use Celebrity Names

Fijians have been cautioned about scams like Paragonix, which exploit the names and images of well-known figures to promote illicit schemes. In a statement, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu revealed that his name, along with those of notable Fijians such as rugby stars Waisale Serevi and Jerry Tuwai, The Fiji Times editor Fred Wesley, and influencer Shania Singh, has been misused in these scams.

Seruiratu emphasized that he has no affiliation with Paragonix and expressed concern about the growing number of scam incidents despite the efforts of the Consumer Council and law enforcement agencies. He noted that many scams go unreported, further complicating the issue amid challenges like poverty and unemployment, coupled with the complexities of global digitization.

“Unfortunately, as technology advances and connectivity increases, scammers find new ways to reach and exploit vulnerable individuals,” he stated. “Economic difficulties exacerbate the issue, making it crucial for individuals to be wary of the allure of quick financial gains.”

He called for greater consumer education to combat scams and stressed the need for a collective approach involving government entities, law enforcement, regulators, NGOs, religious organizations, educational institutions, and the community.
