Fiji Airports has recently issued a warning about a fraudulent scam circulating on social media that falsely claims Nadi International Airport is conducting sales of unclaimed baggage. The scam involves posts encouraging users to visit a specific website to purchase luggage, and it has reportedly been shared over 200 times, leading some individuals to place orders based on comments in the original post.
Fiji Airports has firmly stated, “We can confirm that no such sales are being held or authorized by Fiji Airports.” They caution the public that these posts are part of a scam and encourage everyone to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with such misleading advertisements. The airport authority has advised that any suspicious posts should be reported to Facebook as scams, and they will be addressing this issue with the relevant authorities.
Furthermore, Fiji Airports clarified that all unclaimed baggage and lost items remain under the custody of the airlines and are governed by the Fiji Revenue and Customs Services. They stressed, “Do not be misled by individuals or pages pretending to represent Fiji Airports.”
This warning about the luggage sale scam parallels recent alerts by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) regarding other deceptive social media advertisements. These include fraudulent claims about free online courses and job placements that also misappropriate government logos for authenticity. FCCC officials are highlighting the need for public vigilance, particularly during festive seasons like Diwali, when scams tend to increase.
To protect themselves, both Fiji Airports and the FCCC recommend that individuals verify offers through official channels and approach unsolicited deals with skepticism, especially during periods of heightened online activity.
The continued emphasis on public awareness and education is key to combating these growing digital threats. By staying informed and reporting suspicious activities, Fijians can contribute to a safer online environment for all, allowing them to enjoy festive seasons without falling victim to scams.
