Justice Sekonaia Vodokisolomone of the High Court has mandated the State to issue bench warrants for Faris Khan and Mohammed Ramjan following their failure to appear in court yesterday. The two are charged with aggravated robbery and theft, which allegedly took place in Lautoka in 2021, alongside co-defendant Salendra Sen Sinha.
During the proceedings, Ramjan’s attorney, Benazir Muhammed, emphasized that her client typically attends court sessions. However, Justice Vodokisolomone made it clear that the court cannot proceed until the bench warrants for both Ramjan and Khan are filed. He also sought clarification from the State regarding the absence of full instructions from the counsel responsible for the case.
The judge instructed that the relevant bench warrant orders need to be filed by the next scheduled court date. The case has been adjourned to November 6, allowing time for the necessary legal procedures to occur.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges within the judicial system, particularly concerning the attendance of accused individuals in court cases. A strict adherence to court schedules is crucial, as demonstrated by similar cases where defendants have faced consequences for missing appearances. The judicial system remains committed to ensuring accountability and maintaining an order in legal processes, reinforcing the importance of responsibility among individuals facing charges.
