The Suva Magistrate’s Court has issued a bench warrant for Isikeli Komaisavai, the former vice-president of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) in Nasinu, after he failed to attend his scheduled hearing. Komaisavai, aged 52, faces charges related to electronic communication involving threats made against former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

The allegations date back to February 10, 2021, when Komaisavai allegedly posted comments on Facebook that called for Sayed-Khaiyum to be killed, as well as making threats against his own life. During the court proceedings, Police prosecutor Sharmila Lata informed Magistrate Jeremaia Savou that all witnesses for the prosecution were present, while Komaisavai was absent. The court allowed the trial to proceed in his absence.

Notably, among the state’s witnesses is Sayed-Khaiyum himself, who is set to testify against Komaisavai. The case has been postponed to December 17, when a judgment will be made.

This situation serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of online communication and the legal obligations individuals have regarding their statements. It underscores the importance of accountability in public discourse, especially in a political context. The upcoming judgment could provide a pathway for clearer legal standards concerning threats made through social media, emphasizing the need for responsible communication.

This case highlights the legal system’s commitment to addressing potentially harmful statements while also reinforcing the principle of accountability in political and public life.
