The Suva Magistrate’s Court has taken action by issuing a bench warrant for Isikeli Komaisavai, the former vice-president of the Nasinu constituency for the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), after he failed to attend his scheduled hearing. Komaisavai, aged 52, is facing charges for causing harm through electronic communication.

The allegations state that on February 10, 2021, he made a threatening comment on Facebook directed at the then Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. The comment reportedly called for Sayed-Khaiyum’s death, which has contributed to the seriousness of the charges against him.

During a court session with Magistrate Jeremaia Savou, police prosecutor Sharmila Lata noted that all witnesses were present, yet Komaisavai was absent. She requested that the trial proceed without him, which the court permitted. Notably, among the witnesses for the State is Sayed-Khaiyum himself, who has been summoned for testimony.

The case will be revisited on December 17, where a judgment is expected to be delivered.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges in the political and legal landscape, reminding us of the importance of accountability and the rule of law. It is hopeful to note that the judicial system is taking necessary steps to address these serious allegations, ensuring that justice is pursued.
