Tragic news struck the community when popular radio personality Maikeli Radua lost his life in a car accident in Nadera, Nasinu, just a day after he joyously welcomed his grandson into the world. The 51-year-old was eagerly anticipating bringing the newborn home when the accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, following a broadcast in Nausori.
His grieving wife, Maria Radua, described the emotional moment they shared with their new grandchild at the Valalevu Health Centre, where she received the devastating news of her husband’s passing. “He was so excited to meet his grandson,” she recalled, highlighting the playful argument they had over who would get to hold the baby first during their visit.
As Radua drove home, he informed Maria about the poor road conditions due to heavy rain, after which she urged him to drive carefully. Tragically, he lost control of his vehicle, veering off the road before bystanders rushed him to the health center, where he was pronounced dead.
This tragic incident adds to the growing concern regarding road safety in Fiji. While reports show a slight decrease in the overall road death toll, this particular accident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers on the roads. Radua’s untimely passing has led to an influx of tributes on social media, reflecting on his career as the head of VitiFM and his role in promoting the iTaukei language and culture through broadcasting.
Radua is survived by his wife, four children, and one grandchild, leaving behind a legacy not only in his family but also in the hearts of those he inspired through his work. Community leaders and safety advocates are emphasizing the importance of responsible driving, hoping that raised awareness will help prevent such tragedies in the future. This incident underscores a collective responsibility towards road safety, urging everyone to prioritize safe driving practices for the protection of families and communities alike.
