Beyond the headline

Steven, the much-loved canine resident of Musket Cove Island Resort and Marina, is set to leave Fiji this week after finding a permanent home on a farm in New Zealand, the resort announced on social media. The gentle, soft-natured dog arrived at the resort unannounced about 18 months ago and quickly became a familiar face—often greeting guests and making himself at home around the property.

In its post, Musket Cove said Steven “quickly became part of the Musket Cove family,” winning the affection of both staff and visitors with his friendly demeanour. The resort described him as affectionate and soft-natured, a regular companion on the resort grounds who helped shape many guests’ stays. For months, visitors would be greeted by Steven as they arrived or would find him lounging in the shade near common areas, a presence the resort says will be sorely missed.

The move comes after one of the resort’s regular guests formed a strong bond with Steven during repeated visits and offered to give him a permanent home on their New Zealand farm. After several months of planning and consideration between the guest and Musket Cove staff, the resort confirmed that arrangements have been finalised and Steven is ready to start his new life abroad.

“We will miss him and wish him well,” the resort wrote, reflecting the emotional but celebratory tone of the announcement. Staff members said the decision followed careful thought about what would be best for Steven long-term, and the farm environment was viewed as offering stability, space and ongoing care that suited him.

The departure highlights the informal ways animals sometimes become part of island resort life and the logistical and emotional work involved in rehoming an animal internationally. Musket Cove’s update did not detail the travel arrangements or the guest’s identity, only that the planned move would take place this week and that Steven would be leaving Fiji bound for New Zealand.

For the resort and its visitors, Steven’s relocation marks the next chapter in a story that began when he turned up on the property and settled in. While staff and guests prepare to say goodbye, the resort’s message stressed gratitude for the new owner’s offer of a home and optimism about Steven’s life ahead on the farm in New Zealand.
