China has expressed strong discontent towards Fiji following the visit of Filipo Tarakinikini, Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, to Taiwan. The Chinese government regards this visit as a breach of the one-China principle, which is essential to its diplomatic relations with countries like Fiji.
Tarakinikini attended meetings in Taiwan where he interacted with the Taiwanese Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, as part of a delegation that included ambassadors from other nations allied with Taiwan, such as the Marshall Islands and Paraguay. During these discussions, Hsiao expressed gratitude for their support, noting its importance for Taiwan’s role within the international community.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning condemned the visit, stating it severely violates Fiji’s political commitment to Beijing. Mao asserted, “China firmly opposes any form of official interactions between China’s Taiwan region and countries having diplomatic ties with China,” expressing that such actions are unacceptable and will not succeed.
This diplomatic incident coincides with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji. Mao highlighted that Fiji was the first Pacific island nation to establish ties with New China, and noted significant interactions over the years aimed at strengthening cooperation in various sectors.
Despite the tense situation, Chinese officials reiterated their commitment to enhancing the relationship with Fiji. Mao stated that China is keen on working with Fiji to implement agreed understandings, enhance political mutual trust, and expand collaboration, aiming to elevate the existing partnership. The sentiment voiced during the anniversary celebrations indicates a desire to keep channels open, suggesting that ongoing dialogue may yield fruitful outcomes amid geopolitical challenges in the Pacific region.
As Fiji navigates its strategic position between China and Taiwan, it may potentially foster greater stability and cooperation, not only benefiting its own diplomatic relations but also contributing to the broader Pacific community’s resilience in addressing common issues.
