Breast cancer represents more than mere statistics; it reflects the deeply personal stories and struggles that affect families, friends, and communities. This poignant message was shared by Akosita Toga, a former tertiary lecturer, during an event at the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education. The occasion marked the institution’s celebration of both Picktober and Diwali.
Ms. Toga emphasized the shared nature of the battle against breast cancer, urging nursing students and staff to actively promote the breast health care services available in Fiji. She passionately remarked, “Breast cancer touches countless lives; our mothers, sisters, friends, and even ourselves. No one should fight cancer alone.”
Highlighting the importance of early detection, she informed the students that it is essential for preventing breast cancer and ensuring effective treatment. Consequently, creating awareness about the condition is vital.
October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) worldwide, serving to enhance understanding of breast cancer, emphasize the significance of early detection and timely intervention, and advocate for comprehensive support for individuals living with the disease.
By fostering awareness and encouraging early detection, we can collectively hope for a future that sees fewer battles against breast cancer. The commitment shown by institutions and individuals like Ms. Toga is essential in moving towards this positive vision.
