The recent two-day Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva incurred an expense of $200,000, as confirmed by GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula. The funding for this important gathering was drawn from the i-Taukei Trust Fund, which is dedicated to supporting the Council’s operations and initiatives.

Seruvakula acknowledged the significant costs but stated that they were meticulously managed, particularly emphasizing the expense related to the venue. He explained that the chosen location was strategically selected to meet the Council’s requirements, ensuring comfort and adequate facilities for the participants. The decision to host the event at the Grand Pacific Hotel was due to previous venue considerations that could not adequately accommodate the needs of the Council.

Looking ahead, Seruvakula announced that the next GCC meeting is slated for May 2025 and will take place at a newly constructed complex. This future venue is expected to streamline logistical expenses, particularly concerning accommodation and facilities.

Seruvakula further reiterated the meeting’s budget reflects the Council’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for its vital discussions. The GCC plays a crucial role in bringing together paramount chiefs and provincial leaders to address key issues impacting the i-Taukei communities.

As the GCC continues to organize these pivotal meetings, the focus remains on fostering collaboration and dialogue for the betterment of the communities they represent. Overall, the careful planning and future investments in facilities indicate a forward-thinking approach aimed at enhancing engagement and efficiency for the Council’s important work.
