The ongoing situation surrounding the Grace Road Group has escalated beyond a mere custody dispute, evolving into a significant human rights issue concerning both Korean adults and the 22 children within the organization. A former member of Grace Road Church, who recently escaped from True Mart in Navua, voiced her urgent need to leave an oppressive environment, seeking a better life for herself and her children.
Speaking anonymously, she highlighted the disparities in treatment between Korean members and their Fijian counterparts, asserting that while the local employees receive proper labor rights, the treatment of Korean individuals is akin to that of animals. She expressed that it is unjust for a business to operate under such conditions.
This situation is particularly distressing given that the founder of the Grace Road Group has been sentenced to an additional six years in prison in South Korea due to harmful teachings she propagated, which the escapee attributes to the coercion faced by Korean members.
The woman emphasized that her intention is not to dismantle the Grace Road Group but to advocate for the fundamental human rights of its Korean members, similar to those available to Fijian workers. She insists that the organization should comply with Fiji’s labor laws, which include fair working hours, appropriate time off, regular paychecks, health benefits, and pensions.
While the Grace Road Group has undoubtedly contributed to positive developments in Fiji, the former member raised concerns about the high demands placed on Korean workers. Many toil for over 12 hours a day without breaks and are subjected to manipulative spiritual practices multiple times a week.
After enduring what she described as an inhumane lifestyle for eight years, she feels compelled to share her experiences with the world, shedding light on the severe conditions reported by other former members.
As of now, inquiries directed toward the Grace Road Group have not yielded any responses.
