Beauty Meets Sustainability: Miss Labasa’s Award-Winning Sarong Steals the Spotlight

In an impressive showcase of cultural and environmental pride, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representing the Labasa Divisional Hospital, won the Best Sarong award at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North’s Global Night. The 22-year-old captivated the audience on Monday night at Subrail Park in Labasa with a sarong that represented not just attire, but a narrative centered on organic farming.

Beginning with an elegant twist around her neck, the sarong symbolized a journey rooted in organic farming principles. Adi Marica’s innovative presentation highlighted the importance of sustainable agriculture in a visually appealing way, ultimately earning her the top honor.

An attaché from the pathology department of Labasa Divisional Hospital noted that the knot in the sarong represented a strong commitment to nurturing the planet and promoting sustainable farming practices. “After a rewarding day at the farm, the sarong seamlessly transitions into an elegant beach look with a knot below the bust,” said Ms. Waqaniburotu. “It embodies relaxed sophistication, ideal for enjoying the coastal breeze.”

She explained that her headpiece was crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, symbolizing the fruits and vegetables grown on the organic farm. “I was astonished to win the prize and could hardly believe it. I almost cried as all the other contestants had stunning sarongs,” she shared. The sarong was a collaborative effort between her and her sister, illustrating the bond between them and the rewards of their hard work.

Currently in her final year at Fiji National University, Adi Marica is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. She originates from Makadru, Matuku, Lau, and has maternal connections to Taviya Village in Ovalau. Her advocacy centers around revitalizing the North through organic farming.

“I truly believe that organic farming is a pathway to a healthier and sustainable future, and I am very passionate about it,” she expressed. Adi Marica is one of nine contestants competing for the Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North crown, set to take place this Saturday.
