The Ministry of Local Government is collaborating with the Savusavu Town Council to enhance beautification projects in the region. Minister Maciu Nalumisa emphasized in Parliament that these efforts are integral to the NaVualiku Tourism Program, which aims to bolster tourism infrastructure and attract visitors.

To lead these initiatives effectively, a full-time officer has been appointed. The beautification project is supported by funding from the World Bank, which has allocated $6.75 million for solid waste management and landfill development between Savusavu and Labasa. The Council is currently scouting for an appropriate site for the landfill, illustrating a commitment to sustainable waste management practices.

“This initiative also forms a crucial part of the NaVualiku Tourism Project. Environmental stakeholders and the working group are dedicated to ensuring the project’s successful implementation,” Nalumisa stated.

Assistant Minister for Transport, Naisa Tuinaceva, echoed Nalumisa’s views, asserting that Savusavu has the potential to emerge as a prominent tourism hub. Despite its modest population of around 6,000, Savusavu is positioned as a gateway to Vanua Levu’s tourism sector, thanks in part to high-end resorts that attract visitors to Fiji.

The overarching goal of the NaVualiku Tourism Program is to improve tourism-related infrastructure, thereby creating job opportunities and ultimately benefiting the local community. Additionally, plans are underway to develop a comprehensive tourism master plan aligned with the Blue Town model, which emphasizes sustainable tourism practices.

This initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to elevating the local economy and encouraging community involvement in tourism development. By prioritizing environmental sustainability and establishing a framework for robust tourism infrastructure, the project is set to transform Savusavu into a thriving economic center and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
