Thirteen vendors selling bean carts near the Suva Bus Stand have been moved to the Suva Municipal Market due to safety concerns associated with planned road upgrades. Tevita Boseiwaqa, the chair of the Suva City Council (SCC), highlighted the potential hazards from heavy machinery that will soon be operating in the MPI car park as part of the Fiji Roads Authority’s (FRA) redevelopment project.
Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety, stating that allowing vendors to continue their operations in the current location would increase liability for the council regarding safety risks. He noted that a comprehensive redevelopment plan for the western bus stand is projected for the next fiscal year, but current focus remains on the necessary road upgrades.
To facilitate the relocation, the council engaged with the vendors to ensure a smooth transition, issuing notices and identifying suitable alternative locations for their stalls. The council’s statement confirmed that these efforts were in line with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards, aiming to balance safety with the vendors’ needs.
Mr. Boseiwaqa mentioned that the decision to relocate was made transparently and inclusively, with feedback from the vendors being largely positive. This proactive approach not only addresses safety risks but also demonstrates a commitment to supporting local businesses during infrastructure improvements.
Overall, this relocation can be seen as a step towards enhancing the city’s infrastructure while ensuring the vendors can continue their businesses in a safe environment. The collaboration between the council and vendors serves as a positive example of community engagement during urban development.
