A beach clean-up event held by the South Sea Cruise Group (SSCG) at Wailoaloa Beach on April 23, 2025, saw over 110 kilograms of waste collected in just over an hour. This initiative marked World Earth Day 2025 under the global theme ‘Our Power, Our Planet.’ Employees from various departments within SSCG, along with tourists, participated in the effort to clear the beach of litter, including glass bottles, plastic packaging, foam, and aluminum cans.
Participants sorted the rubbish into categories such as plastics, glass, and cans, and weighed them to gain insights into the pollution levels affecting the beach. Notably, glass and plastic waste were identified as the most prevalent pollutants. The clean-up took place after the busy Easter weekend, when many families visited the beach, resulting in a significant amount of litter being left behind.
Alalaini Naqoli, SSCG’s general manager for people and culture, expressed gratitude towards the supporters, including tourists and the families of SSCG employees, who contributed to making the event a success. She highlighted that the clean-up not only removed visible waste but also raised awareness about pressing environmental issues such as pollution and the need for improved waste management practices.
The event concluded with refreshments and a friendly volleyball game, fostering a sense of community and teamwork among participants. Naqoli reiterated SSCG’s commitment to sustainability and protecting Fiji’s vital ocean resources, underscoring the importance of such initiatives for the health of the environment and the tourism industry.
This grassroots effort aligns with other clean-up campaigns occurring in Fiji, which reflect a growing community commitment to environmental stewardship. Similar efforts, including clean-ups organized by the Pacific Ocean Litter Youth Project (POLYP), demonstrate widespread public involvement in addressing litter and promoting sustainable practices. By joining forces, individuals and organizations are cultivating a more socially and environmentally responsible community, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future for Fiji.
