Government officials and the Rakiraki Town Council are intensifying efforts to prevent flooding in Rakiraki. A survey conducted in 2022 revealed that the town suffered financial losses ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 due to the impact of 27 floods.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa addressed Parliament, highlighting that flooding is a chronic issue for Rakiraki, largely attributed to its geographical features and climate. Key areas that frequently experience flooding include Naqoro Flat and the Nakauvadra Range backroad.
Rakiraki is particularly vulnerable to flash floods during heavy rainfall, especially in the wet and cyclone seasons. Mr. Nalumisa pointed out that since 2018, a total of 27 floods have been recorded, with an average of four floods anticipated each year, which he noted is significant. He mentioned that flooding often disrupts the town, causing road closures and requiring two to three days to clean up affected public areas and businesses.
The Minister also indicated that the aftermath of flooding leads to increased health risks, such as leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue fever, due to contaminated water, inadequate sanitation, and the proliferation of disease-carrying mosquitoes.
To address these challenges, the Rakiraki Town Council has developed a Disaster Management Policy that includes a Disaster Management Operation, which is generally activated in November and remains in effect until April.
