Communities on Batiki Island are calling on the government to urgently address the ongoing shortage of reliable drinking water that has affected the island for over twenty years. During a recent visit from the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Mosese Bulitavu, local leaders from Mua, Manuku, Yavu, and Naigani emphasized the severity of the issue, highlighting the dependence on rainwater harvesting as the main supply source. This dependence has made life difficult for the residents, especially during dry seasons when water becomes even scarcer.
Mata ni Tikina Tevita Tavodi voiced the community’s concerns, stating that access to clean water is undeniably the island’s most critical need. “The people of Batiki have raised this issue for years. Rainwater alone cannot meet our needs,” Tavodi remarked. He stressed that clean drinking water is a fundamental necessity, expressing hope that the government will implement a sustainable, long-term solution to this pressing problem.
As Batiki Island faces this challenge, there is a renewed call for action that could potentially lead to improved conditions for its residents. The community remains optimistic that with proper support and infrastructure, a reliable water supply can become a reality, ensuring health and wellness for all islanders.
