Bati vs. Kumuls: A Clash of Rugby Titans Awaits in Suva!

Two rugby league powerhouses, Fiji Bati and Papua New Guinea Kumuls, are set to clash in a highly anticipated match in Suva as they kick off their Pacific Bowl campaign. This year, the stakes are higher with the introduction of promotion and relegation in 2024, meaning the winning team will compete against the third-placed nation from the Pacific Cup for a spot in the 2025 Pacific Cup pool.

The match at HFC Bank Stadium is expected to draw a passionate crowd, with both teams aiming for a strong start. Last year, the Bati and Kumuls faced off twice in the Pacific Championships, sharing the results. However, this match marks the Bati’s return to play on home soil for the first time since 2000, and coach Tui Kamikamica is determined to make the most of this opportunity.

Fans can expect a fierce battle in the forwards, as Kamikamica and Ben Nakubuwai look to create opportunities for Bulldogs star Viliame Kikau, while the Kumuls’ NRL duo of Jacob Alick and Jack de Belin will strive to gain ground in the middle.

In terms of team news, Fiji Bati will be led by captain Tui Kamikamica of the Storm, featuring seasoned players such as former captain Kevin Naiqama, who will appear in his 25th Test match, and powerful winger Maika Sivo in his 11th Test. Sunia Turuva, a premiers winner with the Panthers, is set to play fullback, while Kurt Donoghoe will take the helm at halfback. Emerging forwards Caleb Navale and Kitione Kautoga are also back after their participation last year.

Rhyse Martin will captain the Kumuls, supported by key players including Jack de Belin, Lachlan Lam, and Nene Macdonald. With star hooker Edwin Ipape sidelined due to injury, Judah Rimbu will step in after his impressive performance for the PM’s XIII. Kyle Laybutt, playing his 12th Test, will partner with Lam.

Statistically, Fiji is playing its first Test at home since a narrow win over Tonga in June 2000. On the other side, the Kumuls have had success against Fiji Bati, winning four of their past six encounters. Maika Sivo has been particularly effective for Fiji, scoring nine tries in his first 10 Test matches. The Kumuls feature eight players with NRL experience, although only two participated in the 2024 season. Notably, Bati captain Tui Kamikamica and winger Sunia Turuva recently competed in the NRL Grand Final. Last year, the Kumuls averaged 31 points per game in their successful Pacific Bowl campaign.
