A new Fijian feature film titled “Bati” is gearing up for its release in Fiji in August after making its debut at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin. Known as one of the largest and most influential film markets globally, EFM serves as a vital platform for filmmakers to engage with distributors, sales agents, and co-production partners.

Directed and produced by Tuvalu-born Andrew John Fakaua Ponton, who also spent his formative years in Fiji, “Bati” is a boxing drama that unfolds in Fiji’s capital, Suva. Mr. Ponton expressed his excitement about the opportunities that EFM offers, stating, “It is a fantastic networking opportunity to be at the European Film Market representing Pacific Island Cinema.” He added that it is a “big honour” for him and he eagerly anticipates showcasing the film to audiences in the Pacific.

This upcoming release of “Bati” not only highlights the emergence of Pacific Island cinema on the world stage but also reflects a growing interest in diverse storytelling from smaller nations. With its setting and cultural context, “Bati” promises to resonate well with audiences both locally and internationally.

By spotlighting aspiring filmmakers from the Pacific, this film symbolizes the potential for broader recognition and appreciation of regional narratives in the global film industry.
