BAT Fiji Takes Bold Step Towards Sustainability with $1.2 Million Solar Investment

British American Tobacco Fiji has entered into a contract with Vision Energy Solutions for a solar energy project worth $1.2 million, aimed at enhancing sustainability at its facilities in Nabua and Nadi.

The agreement includes the installation of solar panels at BAT Fiji’s Nabua Factory and the Leaf Division in Nadi, creating an 812kW power system expected to generate approximately 880,000 kWh of electricity annually for both sites.

Sam Dormor, the general manager of BAT Fiji, highlighted that the solar initiative is a key step in the company’s sustainability efforts. He noted, “Over the past two years, BAT Fiji has made considerable investments to progress towards our sustainability goals, showcasing our commitment to combating climate change.”

Dormor further emphasized that this collaboration with Vision Energy Solutions would lead to about a 60% reduction in electricity usage and a 32% decrease in carbon emissions at the Nabua site. This project supports BAT Fiji’s objective of achieving 50% renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions by 50% by the year 2030.

Installation of the solar panels began earlier this week and is anticipated to be completed by January 2025.

Sanjesh Prasad, CEO of Vision Investments, expressed pride in partnering with BAT Fiji for this solar initiative. He stated, “We have a capable local team that has successfully executed large-scale solar projects throughout the country.”

Prasad also mentioned that Vision Energy Solutions handles all aspects of the project internally, from supply and installation to commissioning and maintenance, ensuring comprehensive after-sales service. He concluded by reiterating their commitment to supplying renewable energy for Fijian businesses while promoting environmental sustainability through community engagement and responsible practices.
