Bastille Day Celebration Strengthens France-Fiji Bonds

The French Embassy hosted a grand celebration at the FMF Gymnasium, attended by over 400 guests, to reinforce the bonds of friendship between France and Fiji.

This event marked France’s annual Bastille Day, commemorating the onset of the 1789 Revolution. French Ambassador to Fiji, François-Xavier Léger, highlighted its significance, stating it celebrates a historical milestone and reminds both nations of their shared values and mutual respect.

“This is the national day of France, and today we’re also celebrating the upcoming Olympic Games 2024. It’s been 100 years since Paris last hosted the Olympics,” Léger said. He also noted that the bilateral relationship between France and Fiji has stimulated national development in various sectors of the Fijian economy.

“We advocate for the peaceful resolution of conflicts and combat the impact of climate change. Our stances align on many international issues,” the Ambassador added. He affirmed the robust relationship between the two nations saying, “The relationship between the two countries is excellent, and we have very strong ties.”

Recently, the French government expressed its willingness to collaborate with Fiji to tackle the issue of drug trafficking. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of this assistance, given France’s significant drug issues in Europe.

“I think this Pacific island country and France face similar challenges, and we should unite to combat these drug issues,” he stated.

Distinguished members of the diplomatic corps were among the over 400 guests in attendance at the Bastille Day celebration.
