Basketball Fiji is taking proactive steps to alleviate the financial burden for its athletes ahead of the upcoming Pacific Mini Games set to take place in Palau from June 29 to July 9. Each athlete faces a significant levy of $3,000, prompting the federation to launch various fundraising initiatives in recent weeks to help offset these costs.

In addition to these fundraising efforts, Basketball Fiji has submitted a formal payment proposal to the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC), which outlines how it plans to manage the financial obligations imposed on its players. This effort underscores Basketball Fiji’s commitment to supporting its athletes during regional and international competitions, reflecting a history of stepping in to cover costs and ensuring participants can compete without undue financial stress.

CEO Vanessa Kilner of FASANOC previously revealed that the overall expenses for each athlete could reach approximately $15,500, with the government, FASANOC, and federations sharing costs. However, many athletes often face pressure to fundraise up to 25% of their travel and participation fees. The collective fundraising efforts seen across different sports disciplines in Fiji demonstrate a strong sense of community support, uniting families, athletes, and federations in their realization of these financial challenges.

Team Fiji is scheduled to depart for Palau on June 27, aiming to showcase the talents and dedication of its athletes on an international platform. The passionate community response around fundraising initiatives draws hope, emphasizing the collective determination of the Fijian sports community to overcome financial hurdles and ensure that athletes receive the support they need to perform at their best.

As the Pacific Mini Games approach, the combined efforts of Basketball Fiji and their fellow federations illustrate a spirit of resilience and unity that is vital for fostering national pride as Fijian athletes prepare to represent their country.
