Fijian Drua halfback Philip Baselala is determined to secure a top-three position in the team. Currently, at just 20 years old, he sits fourth in the squad, facing competition from fellow players Frank Lomani, Simione Kuruvoli, and Peni Matawalu.
Baselala expressed that one of his primary goals for the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific season is to gain more playing time. He values the healthy competition among his teammates, stating, “Frank and Simi encouraged me to challenge each other because it won’t only help us but also help push for our fitness and to get a spot in the starting line-up.”
Although he played two Super Rugby matches in 2023, Baselala’s season was hindered by significant knee and wrist injuries, the latter requiring surgery. Thankfully, he announced, “I was able to complete my rehab, and I finally got the green light to play again.”
The journey of recovery, combined with his ambitious mindset, positions Baselala as a player to watch in the upcoming season. His determination and resilience not only inspire his teammates but also bring hope to the fans looking forward to his contributions on the field.
As he sets his sights on a starting position, Baselala’s story reflects the spirit of perseverance and commitment essential in sports, reminding us all that setbacks can lead to comebacks with hard work and determination.
