A new chapter in Ba’s sporting history commenced last week with the grand opening of the revitalized 4R Stadium, formerly known as Govind Park. This festive occasion was highlighted by an exciting Skipper Cup match pitting local favorites Ba against visitors Suva.
The stadium was inaugurated by Hon. Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government, who emphasized the facility’s importance as a significant investment in national development, youth empowerment, and community pride. His comments resonated with the thousands of fans who gathered to celebrate the return of premier rugby to Ba after many years.
The newly upgraded stadium features seating for 9,000 spectators, includes four spacious changing rooms, a dedicated media room, administration offices, and four broadcasting booths, making it one of the most modern venues in the Western Division.
Although the Ba team faced a challenging match, losing to Suva with a score of 35-13, the spirit among fans remained high, showcasing the community’s pride in hosting such a major event at their upgraded stadium. Notably, this match marked the first time in over three decades that Suva has played in Ba, generating excitement among local supporters.
Minister Nalumisa articulated that the newly developed stadium transcends its role as a sports facility; it serves as a venue for unity and opportunity, with the potential to stimulate economic growth and tourism in the region. He expressed that the investment in sports infrastructure is integral to fostering community engagement and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
The opening festivities were complemented by cultural performances, exemplifying Ba’s vibrant community spirit. With the revamped 4R Stadium poised to host a variety of major rugby, football, and community events in the near future, it is clear that Ba is carving out its identity as a proud sporting hub in Fiji.
This redevelopment not only signals a bright future for local sports but also creates pathways for unity and economic revival within the community, fostering hope and excitement among residents. As Ba Rugby Union continues to develop their young team, the community can be optimistic about the growth and future of rugby in the region.
