In recent months, the barrow boys in Nadi have experienced the tragic loss of eight members due to drug overdoses. This concerning issue was brought to the attention of Sashi Kiran, the Assistant Minister for Women, during her visit to the region.
Kiran met with the group and acknowledged that while some of them live on the streets, others have homes but still spend time roaming. Many of these individuals possess skills in various trades, including plumbing, tiling, and welding.
During the meeting, they expressed their desire to change their circumstances and shared their grief over the loss of friends. To address this, they agreed to participate in consultations and training sessions focused on de-addiction, financial literacy, and reintegration into the workforce.
Additionally, the group discussed the potential of forming a cooperative, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports has pledged to collaborate with these young men to help facilitate a better life for them. Kiran confirmed that ongoing consultations will continue to support those living on the streets in their pursuit of a better future.
