The Barracuda Swim Club triumphed at the recent Fiji Short Course Age Groups Nationals, achieving an impressive medal haul that included 72 Gold, 53 Silver, and 35 Bronze medals over the weekend. Tritons Swim Club took second place, while the Great White Sharks finished third.
Lucy Erasito, the president of Fiji Swimming, praised the commitment of the coaches and parents in supporting the athletes. “The dedication of these young swimmers over the past months, as they balanced training with their academic responsibilities, has been truly commendable,” Erasito remarked.
The competition was noteworthy for the setting of eight Age Group National records and six Fiji Open records. Among the many standout performances, Grace Khelan broke four records—two national ones in the 11-12 age category for the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke, as well as two Fiji short course open records in those same events.
Additionally, Nigel Simpson established two Fiji Short Course Open records in the 8 and Under category for the 50m freestyle and 200m backstroke. Samuel Yalimaiwai also made headlines with a new National record in the 17 & Over category for the 50m breaststroke.
Hansel McCaig delivered perhaps the most remarkable performance of the event, smashing seven records within the 17 & Over age group, which included five national records and two Fiji open SC records.
The event was a significant success, thanks in part to the contributions of officials who helped ensure smooth proceedings.
This weekend of competition not only highlighted the talent in Fiji’s swimming community but also fostered a spirit of resilience and teamwork among the athletes. The dedication shown by these young swimmers and their support networks brings hope for continued success and growth in Fiji’s aquatic sports scene in the future.
