The Barracuda Swim Club triumphed at the Fiji Short Course Age Groups Nationals competition over the weekend, securing an impressive haul of 72 Gold, 53 Silver, and 35 Bronze medals. The Tritons Swim Club finished in second place, with the Great White Sharks taking third.
Fiji Swimming president Lucy Erasito acknowledged the hard work of the coaches dedicated to training the athletes and expressed appreciation for the steadfast support from parents. “The athletes have been training tirelessly over the past few months, diligently balancing their academics with their preparation. Their dedication has truly been remarkable,” Erasito stated.
The event witnessed the breaking of eight Age Group National records and six FIJI Open records. Notable achievements included performances by Grace Khelan, Hansel McCaig, Nigel Simpson, and Samuel Yalimaiwai, who all set record-breaking marks at the National Championships.
Grace Khelan broke a total of four records: two national records in the 11-12 age category for the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke, as well as two Fiji short course open records in those same events. Nigel Simpson set two Fiji Short Course Open records in the 8 and Under category for the 50m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke. Samuel Yalimaiwai established a new National record in the 17 & Over category for the 50m Breaststroke.
Hansel McCaig distinguished himself by breaking seven records in the 17 & Over age group, achieving five SC national records in the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 100m individual medley, and 50m backstroke, along with two Fiji open SC records in the 50m freestyle and 100m individual medley.
Special commendation was also given to the officials whose contributions were vital to the success of the event.
