In a significant development during the trial surrounding one of the largest drug busts in the country, witness testimony has revealed that David Heritage allegedly used a barge to facilitate the transportation of drugs from the Yasawa waters to the mainland. Witness David Wright, who charters the vessel, testified that Heritage arranged for his barge on three separate occasions in December 2023, paying $3,000 each time.

Captain Ratu Isoa Dina, who helmed the barge, expressed his concerns during the offloading process at Fantasy Island, where he suspected the cargo was illegal drugs. He shared that Heritage reassured him by claiming to have powerful connections within the police, army, and navy. Dina also disclosed that Heritage had hired trucks to transport the cargo once it was offloaded.

Currently, seven individuals stand trial in the High Court in Lautoka facing multiple charges related to the importation, storage, packaging, and transportation of over 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine. Initially, Heritage had pleaded guilty, only to revert to a not guilty plea on the following court date.

This high-profile case follows a series of pleas from various defendants, including others involved who have maintained their not guilty stances. The significant scale of the drugs involved emphasizes the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug trafficking and maintaining community safety.

The trial is not only pivotal for those directly involved but also reflects a broader commitment from Fiji’s judiciary to confront these severe drug-related offenses rigorously. It is hoped that the proceedings will lead to meaningful action against drug trafficking, ultimately contributing to a safer environment for the public. With each step in this trial, there is a positive outlook that justice will be served, reinforcing the legal framework necessary to deter such criminal activities in the future.
