A tragic train accident near Barcelona has resulted in the death of a train driver and left at least 14 passengers injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when a Rodalies commuter train collided with a retaining wall, which then fell onto the tracks between Gelida and Sant Sadurní, according to local reports.

Emergency services are currently evaluating the severity of the injuries sustained by passengers, as 11 ambulances are on-site in Gelida, which is approximately 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) west of Barcelona. The local fire service has deployed 35 crews to the scene, working to rescue individuals trapped within the train. Some of the injured have been evacuated to nearby hospitals, including Moisès Broggi, Bellvitge, and Vila Franca.

The incident unfolded as northeastern Spain experienced heavy storms, contributing to hazardous conditions across the region. Many coastal areas, as well as the northwestern parts of Spain, are under high alert due to the weather. Meanwhile, severe snowstorms have hit the Spanish Pyrenees, and coastal areas around Menorca are facing waves several meters high.

This recent derailment comes just days after another serious rail accident in Adamuz, Andalusia, where two high-speed trains collided, resulting in at least 42 fatalities. This has raised concerns about safety on Spain’s railways as it becomes one of the worst rail disasters in over a decade.

In the wake of these incidents, it is crucial for authorities to assess rail safety measures and ensure that the necessary precautions are in place to prevent such tragedies in the future. The community remains hopeful for the recovery of the injured and is mourning the loss of the train driver.
