A man has been sentenced to 13 months in prison for stealing a renowned painting by street artist Banksy. Larry Fraser, 49, broke into the Grove Gallery in London’s Fitzrovia area using a hammer to steal the signed print of “Girl with Balloon” in September, an artwork valued at approximately £270,000 (around AUD $545,000). The iconic piece shows a young girl reaching for a red heart-shaped balloon, a motif that Banksy has depicted in various forms across the globe.
Although Fraser attempted to disguise himself with a mask, security footage captured his actions, leading to his identification and arrest just two days after the crime. He pleaded guilty to the charges in October.
Detective Chief Inspector Scott Mather commended the swift police response, highlighting the importance of both prosecuting Fraser and ensuring that the beloved artwork was returned to the gallery promptly. The manager of Grove Gallery, Lindor Mehmetaj, expressed relief and gratitude for the recovery of the painting, stating that the police’s quick action significantly lifted the burden from his shoulders.
“Girl with Balloon” first appeared on the streets of Shoreditch in 2002, with Banksy creating several iterations of the image in various locations, including the South Bank in 2004 and at the West Bank in 2005. Known for his politically charged and satirical graffiti, Banksy has established himself as a prominent figure in contemporary art, gaining international acclaim and a lucrative market for his work.
This incident not only underscores the ongoing dialogue about the value and protection of art in public spaces but also reflects the increasing attention placed on art theft. The swift recovery of the stolen piece serves as a hopeful reminder of the commitment to safeguard cultural artifacts.
