Residents of the greater Nadi area, along with members of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce, participated in a public consultation regarding a proposal to rezone part of Wailoaloa Beach. The application, submitted by Wailoaloa Palms Pte Ltd, seeks to change the designation of the land from Open Space Reserve to Special Use for tourism purposes.

During the consultation, several key concerns were raised, including the importance of creating a contingency plan in case the redevelopment is not approved, the necessity of conducting a geotechnical survey, and the potential effects on the marine ecosystem. Residents voiced their frustrations regarding possible restrictions on public access to the beach. However, Jackie Hughes, the Planning Consultant for Wailoaloa Palms Pte Ltd, reassured attendees that access to the beach would remain unrestricted.

As part of the ongoing process, the Nadi Town Council will compile a report to be reviewed by the Department of Town and Country Planning, which will ultimately decide on the rezoning request.

This discussion mirrors broader themes relevant to community engagement in urban development across Fiji, particularly in relation to initiatives like the proposed $87 million Nalagi Residential Apartments in Suva, which has faced similar resident pushback over concerns about proper public consultation and potential environmental impacts. The Nadi consultation presents an opportunity for a constructive dialogue that can lead to growth-focused developments while respecting local community interests.

The emphasis on maintaining public access to Wailoaloa Beach reflects a positive step toward a balanced approach to tourism development, ensuring that local voices are considered in decision-making processes. As the situation unfolds, there remains hope for strategies that will enhance both economic growth and community well-being in the region.
