Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has received an early release from incarceration effective today, following the provisions outlined in Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act. The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) confirmed this development, stating that Bainimarama’s application was thoroughly reviewed in accordance with relevant legal guidelines pertaining to early release and supervised reintegration.

According to Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act, inmates may qualify for early release based on certain criteria designed to maintain community security while aiding the reintegration process. The FCS expressed that all necessary requirements were meticulously evaluated, including the eligibility criteria, stipulations for release, and the supervisory measures to be enacted as per established FCS regulations.

As Bainimarama embarks on this new chapter, the Fiji Corrections Service will remain responsible for monitoring his reintegration, ensuring adherence to all conditions surrounding his early exit from prison.

Bainimarama had been sentenced to one year in prison on May 9, 2024, for an offense related to an attempt to pervert the course of justice concerning the University of the South Pacific case.

Overall, this decision reflects the judicial system’s commitment to allowing individuals to reintegrate into society under structured oversight, promoting rehabilitation and ensuring public safety. It also signals a potential path for Bainimarama to contribute positively to his community moving forward.
