Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, currently incarcerated, did not make any unauthorized phone calls from his mobile device, according to Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the commissioner of Fiji Corrections Services.

Dr. Nakarawa addressed the allegations on Friday, clarifying that no calls had been made from the Nasinu Correction Centre. “There have been no calls,” he stated, adding that the SIM card was sent for analysis, which confirmed the absence of any calls. He also mentioned that the police cybercrime unit investigated the device but found no evidence of external communication.

Last month, the Fiji Corrections Services confirmed that a detailed investigation was conducted regarding the authorized use of Bainimarama’s mobile phone. The High Court permitted him to use the phone to monitor his pacemaker application.

Bainimarama is currently serving a one-year sentence after being convicted of attempting to obstruct justice related to a matter involving the University of the South Pacific.
