Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has been granted early release as of today, as stipulated by Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act. The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) confirmed this development, stating that the decision followed a thorough review of his application conducted in accordance with legal standards for early release and supervised reintegration.

Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act outlines criteria for early release that prioritize both community safety and the effective reintegration of inmates into society. The FCS reported that all relevant requirements were meticulously evaluated, including eligibility criteria, release conditions, and supervision protocols, in line with established regulations.

The Fiji Corrections Service will continue to monitor Bainimarama’s reintegration process to ensure that all conditions of his early release are adhered to. Bainimarama was previously sentenced to one year in prison on May 9, 2024, for attempting to obstruct justice in the University of the South Pacific case.

This development highlights the importance of structured reintegration processes that consider both community safety and the potential for former inmates to successfully return to society. With proper oversight, early release can serve as a second chance for rehabilitation and reintegration, paving the way for positive contributions to the community.
