Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has been granted early release as of today, as per Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act. The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) announced that this decision was made following a thorough review of Bainimarama’s application, processed in accordance with the pertinent legal provisions around early release and supervised reintegration.
According to Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act, certain criteria must be met for an inmate to qualify for early release, emphasizing both community safety and the support of the inmate’s reintegration back into society. The FCS confirmed that all necessary requirements were meticulously evaluated, including factors such as eligibility, release conditions, and the supervision measures outlined by the FCS regulations.
Following his release, the Fiji Corrections Service will continue to monitor Bainimarama’s reintegration to ensure adherence to all stipulated conditions. Bainimarama previously received a one-year prison sentence on May 9, 2024, after being convicted of attempting to pervert the course of justice in relation to the University of the South Pacific case.
This development marks a significant step in Bainimarama’s path toward reintegration, highlighting the systems in place to support individuals transitioning back into the community after incarceration. With ongoing supervision, there is hope that this process can lead to a positive contribution to society.
