Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has been granted an early release today, in accordance with Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act. This announcement was confirmed by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), which conducted a thorough review of his application for early release, ensuring adherence to the legal framework that governs such decisions.
According to the provisions of Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act, inmates may be eligible for early release based on specific criteria designed to protect community security while aiding the reintegration process. The FCS indicated that all necessary factors were meticulously evaluated, including eligibility criteria, release conditions, and supervisory measures as outlined in their regulations.
Following this decision, the Fiji Corrections Service will continue to monitor Bainimarama’s reintegration to ensure he complies with all conditions tied to his early release. Bainimarama had been sentenced to one year in prison on May 9, 2024, after being convicted of an attempt to pervert the course of justice in connection with the University of the South Pacific case.
This early release highlights the importance of rehabilitation and the opportunity for individuals to reintegrate into society. It reflects the belief that with proper oversight and conditions, former inmates can reintegrate successfully and contribute positively to their communities.
