The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has addressed recent discussions on social media regarding the early release of former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama. In a statement, the FCS emphasized that Bainimarama’s release is in accordance with standard legal procedures outlined in the Corrections Act, ensuring that all prisoners receive fair treatment.
The FCS explained that all inmates’ sentences are automatically reduced by one-third, a provision mandated by law. For Bainimarama, who was sentenced to one year in prison, this means his time was cut by four months, allowing for a release date set for early January 2025.
Bainimarama’s early release was also facilitated by his request for temporary community confinement, which is assessed through the established procedures. He will be permitted to remain in the community under supervision, attending work and reporting daily to comply with monitoring by the FCS.
In light of public comparisons to prior high-profile cases, such as that of the late Laisenia Qarase, FCS clarified that the current management differs from those past decisions, ensuring all processes are politically neutral and adhere to established standards. They reiterated that every inmate, including Bainimarama, is entitled to equal treatment under the law, independent of their political history.
The FCS reaffirmed its dedication to the rule of law, urging the public to appreciate the legal framework that guides their operations and to respect the legal process without bias.
This clarification highlights the importance of transparent legal frameworks within the corrections system, underscoring a commitment to fairness and impartiality in the treatment of all prisoners. It serves as a reminder that accountability and adherence to laws are crucial for maintaining public trust in judicial systems.
Summary: The Fiji Corrections Service has confirmed that the early release of former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama adheres to legal standards outlined in the Corrections Act, ensuring fair treatment of all prisoners. The FCS calls for public respect for the legal process and denies any political bias in its operations.
