Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has been granted early release effective today, following provisions outlined in Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act. The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) confirmed that this decision was reached after a thorough review of Bainimarama’s application, adhering to the legal criteria that govern early release and the process of reintegration into society.
Under Section 46 (3), inmates may qualify for early release if they meet certain conditions that prioritize both public safety and the smooth re-entry of the individual into the community. The FCS emphasized that all necessary requirements were meticulously evaluated, including eligibility, release conditions, and implementing appropriate supervisory measures in accordance with the established guidelines of the service.
The oversight of Bainimarama’s reintegration will remain under the purview of the Fiji Corrections Service to ensure his compliance with the conditions linked to his early release. Bainimarama had been sentenced to one year in prison on May 9, 2024, after being convicted of attempting to obstruct justice related to the University of the South Pacific case.
This decision signifies an important step toward reintegration for Bainimarama, opening the door for his return to public life while ensuring community safety remains a priority. As he embarks on this new chapter, the ongoing support from the Fiji Corrections Service highlights the commitment to rehabilitation and responsible reintegration of former inmates into society.
