Former Corrections Officer Epeli Laqeni, who faces a murder charge linked to the death of his de facto partner in Nakasi last year, awaits a critical decision regarding his bail status later this month. Laqeni has made a second application for bail, arguing that his medical condition necessitates specialized treatment, which cannot be adequately provided while he remains in custody.

Appearing in court in a wheelchair, Laqeni’s attorneys highlighted the urgency of his medical needs, citing a report from the Colonial War Memorial Hospital’s Orthopedic Department that recommends he remain hospitalized for treatment. His defense team stated that Laqeni’s health is at risk of permanent disability if his treatment is further delayed, as he currently sleeps on the floor of the remand center due to a lack of available beds.

In contrast, the State Counsel informed the court that there are currently no specialists available to address Laqeni’s condition at the remand facility, although plans are in place for a medical team to assess his situation and determine when he can undergo surgery. The prosecution argued that Laqeni is not classified as an emergency case anymore, thus contributing to his current sleeping arrangements, and maintained that there is no evidence showing the conditions at the remand center are inhumane.

Laqeni’s legal counsel contended that essential family support would be required during his recovery, particularly since he is expected to be bedridden post-surgery. Laqeni stands accused of murdering his partner between September 3 and 5 last year, following which he was arrested and treated for injuries he sustained during the alleged incident.

Justice Usaia Ratuvili is set to announce the verdict on Laqeni’s bail application on February 24th, leaving the former officer’s fate hanging in the balance as legal proceedings continue.
