The Fiji Court of Appeal has scheduled a hearing for the bail pending appeal application for former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former police commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho. The hearing is set for March 27, following their appearance before Justice Chandana Prematilaka.
Their lawyer, Davanesh Sharma, informed the court that all necessary submissions have been filed. During the upcoming session, Justice Prematilaka will evaluate arguments from both the State and defense regarding their convictions and how these affect Qiliho’s bail application.
Bainimarama was convicted last year of attempting to pervert the course of justice in connection with the University of the South Pacific case, while Qiliho was found guilty of abusing his office. Bainimarama received a one-year prison sentence, serving six months before his release, while Qiliho was sentenced to two years in prison.
This legal development marks a critical juncture for both figures, as the outcomes of their appeals could have significant implications on their futures and the political landscape in Fiji. The forthcoming hearing will be closely observed by the public, reflecting the ongoing interest in legal proceedings involving high-profile figures in the country.
Overall, this case underscores the importance of the judicial process in maintaining the rule of law and ensuring accountability, ultimately contributing to the democratic health of Fiji.
