The Magistrates Court in Suva has granted bail to three individuals facing serious allegations, including possession of illegal drugs and assault. The three defendants, identified as Lemeki Baleiwai, 29, Maciua Jiuta, 27, and Asaeli Sususewa, 23, made their appearance in front of Resident Magistrate Krishnan Prasad this morning.
The proceedings were temporarily paused until this afternoon to record the details of their sureties, as the Magistrate needed to attend to other business matters. Baleiwai is charged specifically with illicit drug possession, while Jiuta and Sususewa are facing serious assault charges.
As part of the bail conditions, all three men are required to report to the Lami Police Station on the last Friday of each month and must refrain from engaging with prosecution witnesses. They have been released on a non-cash bail of $300 each and must remain at a fixed address provided to the Court. Additionally, they are prohibited from committing further offenses.
The case has been postponed and is set to be mentioned again on December 2 at 9:30 am.
This situation reflects ongoing efforts within the judicial system to balance the rights of the accused with community safety, allowing individuals to remain in the community while ensuring compliance with legal requirements. It’s a hopeful sign that, despite serious allegations, due process is being followed.
Summary: The Suva Magistrates Court has granted bail to three men charged with serious offenses related to drug possession and assault, imposing reporting conditions and restrictions as their case is set to continue in December.
