A man in his fifties, who is a father of two, has been accused of raping his 33-year-old niece during a drinking session. He appeared before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe in Suva, where he faces a charge of rape. The alleged incident took place in June at the man’s apartment in Tacirua, Fiji.
During the court hearing, state lawyer Katarina Dugan did not oppose granting bail after performing the necessary checks, leading to the issuance of a $500 non-cash bail bond. The defense attorney, Shahlaa Begum, indicated that her client would be residing in Nadi while awaiting further proceedings.
Furthermore, the court has instructed Ms. Dugan to provide a Domestic Violence Restraining Order for both parties involved by November 28. The prosecution plans to present three witnesses, including the complainant and the investigating officer, while the defense will only call the accused to testify. A hearing date is set for April 11 of the following year.
In light of these serious accusations, it is crucial for the legal process to take its course, ensuring that justice is served for both parties involved. The upcoming hearing is a critical opportunity for the truth to emerge in this case, highlighting the importance of due process in the judicial system. The issuance of a restraining order indicates a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals involved, which is a positive step in addressing domestic violence issues in society.
