The Magistrates Court in Suva has approved bail for three men facing serious charges related to illicit drug possession and assault. The accused, Lemeki Baleiwai, aged 29, Maciua Jiuta, 27, and Asaeli Sususewa, 23, appeared before Resident Magistrate Krishnan Prasad earlier today.
The court session was briefly postponed to allow for the recording of their sureties’ details, as the Magistrate had prior commitments. Baleiwai has been specifically charged with possession of illicit drugs, while Jiuta and Sususewa are facing charges of serious assault.
As part of their bail conditions, all three men must report to the Lami Police Station on the last Friday of each month and are prohibited from contacting prosecution witnesses. Each has been granted a non-cash bail set at $300 and must maintain a fixed residential address as directed by the Court. Additionally, they have been instructed against any further offenses.
The case has been scheduled for mention again on December 2 at 9:30 am.
This situation highlights an important aspect of the judicial process, where individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty, and the court’s approach balances the need for accountability with the rights of the accused. As the court proceedings continue, it is hoped that all parties involved will engage in the process constructively and seek a resolution that promotes justice and community safety.
