The Magistrates Court in Suva has approved bail for three individuals facing serious charges related to drug possession and assault. The accused—Lemeki Baleiwai, 29, Maciua Jiuta, 27, and Asaeli Sususewa, 23—appeared before Resident Magistrate Krishnan Prasad this morning.
The case was temporarily put on hold for the afternoon session to allow for the recording of their sureties’ details, as the Magistrate had other matters to attend to.
Baleiwai has been charged specifically with the possession of illicit drugs, while Jiuta and Sususewa face serious assault charges.
As part of their bail conditions, the three men must report to the Lami Police Station on the last Friday of every month and are prohibited from contacting prosecution witnesses. Each was granted a non-cash bail set at $300 and is required to stay at a specified fixed address provided to the court. They have also been warned against committing any further offenses.
The court has scheduled the next mention for December 2 at 9:30 am.
This case highlights the judicial system’s approach to managing serious charges while balancing the rights of the accused. The conditions set forth aim to ensure community safety while allowing the accused the chance to prepare their defense. It emphasizes the importance of accountability and monitoring, which can foster a more effective legal process.
